God is calling! Who will answer?

“There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone.” (1 Corinthians: 12)

The leaders of our church are the people who will shape the future of our congregation. Whether it is through offering thoughtful leadership on Session, compassionate care as a Deacon, careful analysis as a Trustee or discerning care on the Nominating Committee, our church leaders make this church what it is! Below are descriptions of the four ministries our Nominating Committee is looking to fill for this year. Maybe you are being called to one of these. Maybe you sense that call in the life of someone else. If you would like to nominate someone, fill out this form (CLICK HERE). Can’t access the form? Contact the church office. Nominations are due by December 5.

Elder (Book of Order, G-2.0301)

Elders, together with Ministers, have responsibilities for the life of a congregation as well as the whole church. When elected by a congregation, they shall serve faithfully as members of the session. Elders work in particular areas of church life, serving on committees where their gifts can best benefit the church. These include worship, education, fellowship, outreach, mission, property and finance. Elders serve a three year term, which can be renewed for up to 6 consecutive years total. Session typically meets once a month, and committee meeting frequency varies depending.

Deacon

The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. At Harvey Browne, Deacons care for a group of members, offering support, care, and compassion. Deacons chosen to serve on the Board of Deacons offer leadership to the diaconate for a three-year term, which can be renewed for up to 6 consecutive years. Deacons do not have regular meetings. The Board of Deacons meets twice per year.

Trustee

Trustees are called to be stewards of the church’s permanent funds. They monitor and tend to their growth in order that the funds might be available for use by the Session. Trustees meet quarterly.

Congregational Nominating Committee

Nominations for Ruling Elders to serve on Session, Deacons At Large, Board of Deacons and Trustees shall be made by the Nominating Committee made up of active members of the church,  giving fair representation to persons of all age groups, persons of color, gender identity  and persons differently abled who are members of that congregation. At least 2 members of this committee shall be elders designated by the Session, one of who shall be currently on the Session and serve as chairperson of the committee, and the other of whom shall ordinarily serve as chairperson of the committee for following year.  Additionally, one person may be from the Board of Deacons, and one from the Board of Trustees as well as three-at-large members from the congregation.  None of the at-large members shall be an elder in active service on the Session.
