Echos of the Great War

November 4 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join member Dr. Robert Rennie and Worship Arts Director Megan Durham on Wednesday, November 4 in the chapel at 6pm as they take us through an evening of stories and songs of World War I. This lecture recital will explore the First World War through the voices of those who lived it. Featuring historian Robert Rennie, PhD, and Megan Durham, mezzo-soprano, and collaborative pianist Chris, Harbeson-Borgelt, this program weaves together poetry, historical narrative, popular songs, and art song to trace the arc of the war from the optimism of 1914 through the devastation of the trenches and into the lasting legacy of remembrance. Audiences will encounter works by composers and poets whose lives were shaped by the conflict– including eorge Butterworth, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Ivor Gurney, James Reese Europe, Liza Lehmann, Cecil Coles, Rupert Brooke, and Wilfred Owen. Accessible to both music lovers and history enthusiasts, this engaging lecture recital offers a thoughtful and moving exploration of how music bears witness to history, preserving stories of hope, sacrifice, loss, and resilience that continue to resonate today.
